Are giỗ dates lunar or solar?
In Vietnamese custom the annual giỗ (cát kỵ) follows the lunar calendar — the same lunar day and month as the passing. The 49-day and 100-day rites are counted in solar days from the passing date. This tool computes both automatically.
What are tiểu tường, đại tường and cát kỵ?
Tiểu tường is the first anniversary (one lunar year). Đại tường is the second anniversary, ending the formal mourning period. Cát kỵ is the regular annual giỗ from the third year onward.
What happens when the date falls in a leap month?
If the passing occurred in a lunar leap month and a later year lacks that leap month, families typically observe the giỗ on the same day of the corresponding regular month. This tool handles that automatically.
What are the 49-day and 100-day rites?
The 49th day (Chung thất): in Buddhist belief the soul journeys 49 days between rebirths — the family chants sutras and performs merit for the departed. The 100th day (Tốt khốc) closes the weeping period and begins formal mourning. Offerings usually include rice, fruit, votive paper and a prayer text.
